I happened upon this book written specifically on the subject of Buchenwald. The 733rd traveled past Buchenwald on April 11 – the day the camp was liberated. Based on the unusually short distance they covered, it’s possible that they may have stopped there. If you have any information about this please let me know.
UPDATE: Speaking to Ambrose Little, he did not stop at Buchenwald and he doesn’t think the 733rd did, either. “We were too busy trying to push ahead and get to our positions to be able to stop, and we had such large equipment that we had to take with us it would have just been in the way.” I remember grandpa Ivo saying he had been to one of the camps, which he may have done while he was doing his forward observation. I suspect it may have been this camp only because it’s the closest to where they traveled. This is purely speculation.
