I’m Paul and I created this website so anyone interested could learn more about the 733rd. It is mentioned already, but Ivo Schommer was my grandfather. My research on the 733rd got to be pretty involved, and I realized that there might be others doing the same research I was. After a while I figured I should put all my findings on the web to give others a head-start.

When my grandfather first enlisted, he served in the 144th Field Artillery Regiment with the California Army National Guard. As the war progressed, my understanding is that those who served in the 144th later became part of the 733rd Field Artillery Battalion. They went on to train in several locations across the country for what would become the US involvement in the European Theater.

Like many of the GI’s, my grandfather married before leaving for the war. He didn’t think he would ever make it back alive. I actually have a bundle of letters that they wrote back and forth during his time abroad. I haven’t gone through all of them, but I’m glad he kept them for the family to enjoy. My grandfather did survive the war, and he ended up returning to California where he would spend most of his life. He worked a number of jobs when he returned, finally opening his own body shop in Beverly Hills. He retired in Shady Cove, Oregon with the love of his life, June. After her passing, he moved back to California to be with family.

I have enjoyed doing this research and look forward to learning more about the 733rd from others. I hope it helps others to learn more about their friends and family who served in the 733rd!
